Avalanche Airbag

Safety for travelling

Is the avalanche airbag approved by IATA for air transport?

Transporting the avalanche airbag with cartridge (Cartridge Non-Refillable 300 Bar Steel, Carbon Cartridge Non-Refillable 300 Bar, Cartridge Refillable 207 Bar Alu) is permitted under the following conditions:
One avalanche airbag and one cartridge per person
The compressed gas cartridge must contain a class 2.2 gas (all Mammut/Snowpulse cartridges contain class 2.2 gas)
The cartridges must be packaged in such a way that activation is impossible (the cartridge must not be attached to the airbag system)
The airbag must be equipped with a pressure relief valve (all Mammut/Snowpulse airbag systems are equipped with a pressure relief valve).
Authorization from the airline is essential.
Transporting an avalanche airbag with a cartridge is permitted in the cabin as well as in the hold.

What are some tips for travelling with an avalanche airbag and a gas canister?

Compressed gas cartridges for avalanche airbags are considered hazardous materials. Specific regulations must therefore be observed when transporting them on board an aircraft.
Mammut and Snowpulse avalanche airbags can generally be transported by air. Mammut and Snowpulse airbag backpacks, as well as various airbag systems, can also be transported without issue.
The transport of compressed gas cartridges is regulated by the International Air Transport Association (IATA). Private individuals are not normally permitted to carry hazardous materials on airplanes. However, compressed gas cartridges for airbags are subject to specific IATA regulations, which allow the transport of one cartridge per person. These specific regulations are outlined in IATA Table 2.3A.

Tips for traveling with compressed gas cartridges
Check with the airline regarding the transport of cartridges before making a reservation.
Send the airline the cartridge's technical data sheet and an excerpt from IATA Table 2.3A in advance.
We recommend transporting your avalanche airbag in the hold. Place the cartridge in the designated pocket of the avalanche airbag and seal it with its protective cap. Carry a copy of the cartridge's technical data sheet and IATA Table 2.3A with you.

⚠ Important:
Despite IATA authorization, any airline has the right to refuse to transport the cartridge on board the aircraft.

Are there specific regulations for the United States?

The Transportation of United States is not authorized by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) for the transport of filled compressed gas cartridges to, from, and within the United States. This regulation also applies to passengers transiting through the United States.
You can find the TSA regulations here.
Any cartridge transported to the United States must be completely emptied and the cylinder body valve must be removed to allow for visual inspection.

The following cartridges cannot be transported to the United States because, while they can be emptied, they cannot be refilled within US territory:
- Carbon Cartridge Non-Refillable 300 Bar
- Cartridge Non-Refillable 300 Bar Steel
Those who own these cartridges are invited to rent a cartridge locally during their stays in the United States.
The following cartridges can be emptied for transport to the United States and refilled there:
- Cartridge Refillable 207 Bar Alu
- Cartridge Refillable 207 Bar Alu empty
Cartridges can be refilled at dive shops and paintball fields. We recommend using an official Mammut/Snowpulse cartridge refill station.
